If you open the task pane in Microsoft Word 2003 and then select Styles and Formatting, and click on the little arrow next to a style and select Modify, the Modify Style window opens up and you will be able to modify the properties of this style.
In the Modify Style window, you find the “Add to template” and “Automatically update” checkboxes. “What do these checkboxes do?” asked our workshop participants.
The “Add to template” checkbox
If you check the “Add to template” checkbox, it will add the modified style to the template that is
attached to the current document, so that when you can use the modified style in new documents based on the same template. This allows you to easily leverage the style change you are making in future documents.
The “Automatically Update” checkbox
If you check the “Automatically update” checkbox, from now on, Word will automatically redefine the style you selected whenever you apply manual formatting to a paragraph with this style. Note that this feature applies only to paragraph styles and is disabled when you are editing other styles. Use this feature with caution and not with the Normal style.
